ELIJAH

"You two look lovely together." The New York chief of police nods towards Layla and me, and I cringe.

"Oh, we aren't.-"

"Thank you." Layla coos cutting me off.

Shite, I knew this was a bad idea agreeing to come here with her. Layla slips closer beside me grabbing hold of my arm as my phone rings inside my pocket. Despite wanting to shake her off I don't, not wanting to embarrass her here in front of everyone. As the phone continues to ring her eyes dart down to it before she looks up at me. I ignore it until it goes silent, but a couple of seconds later it starts back up again. I grind my teeth but look to the chief. "Give me a moment will you? I need to take this."

"Of course, it was good to speak with you Elijah." I give him a nod and use the excuse to slip from Layla's grasp. Pulling my phone out, Nico’s name flashes across the screen.

Great, now what. I answer the phone just before it goes to voice-mail. "Do ye realize what time it is Nico?" I grumble into the phone. What the fuck could he possibly need right now?

"It's Marina." I instantly straighten.

"What about her?"

He sighs into the phone. "She lit some guy's car on fire at a gas station downtown. Cops were in the area and saw her, hauled her to jail. I need you to get her out before they start prying. They know who she is. I don't need law enforcement up my ass right now." I release a breath of relief that that's all it is.

"Aye, I'll take care of it." I hang up the phone slipping it back into my pocket as I leave. I haven't had time to really spend time with her lately but it doesn't mean I don't have eyes on her. I shake my head. I leave the girl alone for one night without watching over her and she gets herself arrested. "Bloody hell."

When I get to the station she is held at, I check in. Flashing my badge, they lead me into the back. No one asks me questions or stops me. When we stop at a holding cell I look through. She is sitting on the back bench with her legs up, leaning back against the wall with her eyes closed. I motioned for the guard to open the cell.

She remains still as I step inside. "I didn't need your help." She says.

My jaw tightens at her stubborn words. "Aye, looks like ye had it under control."

"Didn't say that. Just said I didn't need your help."

"Ye don't get a choice in the matter. Now get your arse up."

She finally peels her eyes open, taking in my suit and tie outfit. Her glacial gaze pierces through me, but it doesn’t bother me. What does is the look of anger in them but I don't have time to decipher it.

"If ye don't get your arse up, I'll leave ye here and you can deal with your brother when he comes for you.
